Gabriel Jackson of Heritage Hills High School Named 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar for Spencer County

Spencer County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Spencer County: Gabriel Jackson of Heritage Hills High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are recognized for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

"Gabriel truly exemplifies a Lilly Endowment Community Scholar. Throughout the scholarship process, Gabriel’s commitment to his academics, school, community, and extracurricular activities was evident, reflecting a maturity and purpose well beyond his years," said Emily Alvey, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact.

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides full tuition, required fees, and up to $900 per year for required books and equipment for four years of full-time undergraduate study leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Scholars also join the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects them with resources and opportunities to lead on campus and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI).

"This scholarship has opened many doors for me to further my education in Indiana, allowing me to do so without much financial stress. And because of that, I am grateful," said Gabriel Jackson, Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

In nominating Spencer County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar, the committee considered academic performance, activities, essay, family and personal statement, and finalist essay and interview. After narrowing the field of applicants, nominees were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI), the statewide administrator of the program, for final selection.

Since its inception in 1997-1998, Lilly Endowment has supported this program with tuition grants totaling more than $505 million, benefiting over 5,400 Indiana students. The program’s primary purposes are:

To raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana.
To increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations play.
To encourage and support Lilly Scholars’ engagement with Indiana leaders to improve quality of life statewide.

The Community Foundation Alliance is proud to announce that applications are now open for its Community Scholarship Program, offering hundreds of opportunities for students across Southwest Indiana and in select areas of Illinois and Kentucky.

These scholarships, made possible by generous local donors, provide financial support for students pursuing college, university, technical programs, or other post-secondary education paths.

The Spencer County Community Foundation announced that more than $197,000 has been awarded to 26 local nonprofits through its Community Good Grants Program. These grants support projects that strengthen the Spencer County community and improve the quality of life for local residents.

“At its heart, the Community Foundation is here to build a stronger future for Spencer County,” said Emily Alvey, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. “When our donors invest through the Foundation, they’re helping local organizations tackle real issues and create lasting im pact.”

$1,860 to Albion Fellows Bacon Center, Inc. for a one-year subscription to Bloomerang Volunteer Management System
$9,250 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Indiana to grow and support the number of youth served in Spencer County by recruiting more Bigs to be paired with Littles in the community
$10,000 to Boys and Girls Club of Evansville to support staffing and supplies essential to delivering year-round club programming for students in Rockport, Indiana

Women’s Fund of Spencer County Awards More Than $6,900 in Grants to Nine Local Nonprofits

The Women’s Fund of Spencer County, held and administered by the Spencer County Community Foundation, recently awarded more than $6,900 in grants to nine nonprofit organizations serving Spencer County. Grants were announced at a small reception celebrating local organizations working to improve the lives of residents.

Since its founding in 2006, the Women’s Fund has been a permanent resource dedicated to strengthening Spencer County through collective giving. Its mission is to improve the quality of life in Spencer County by supporting programs that provide opportunities, encouragement, knowledge, and hope.

This year’s grants support a wide range of programs—from equine-assisted learning and prevention education to mentoring, financial literacy, music, and more:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Indiana for the High School Bigs Sustainability project

“The Women’s Fund was established in 2006 and gave out the first grants in 2009. It has been a collaboration of a lot of women putting their thoughts, money, talents, and treasures into a Fund that they thought would pay off someday. Today demonstrates that pay off,” said Marlene Parsley, President of the Women’s Fund of Spencer County.

Parsley noted that the Fund’s work continues to grow thanks to the generosity of community members. “We typically have a Mother’s Day mailing, and that is our one single fundraiser each year, but we take donations year-round. The leadership group, which is ten women, got together and reviewed all the grant applications, which were all really good requests, and we were able to grant to nine different organizations. We’re grateful for that and hope to grow grantmaking down the road.”

Spencer County Community Foundation Awards $50,000 Impact Grant to Christian Resource Center’s “Hope for Tomorrow” Program

The Spencer County Community Foundation awarded a $50,000 Impact Grant to the Christian Resource Center in support of its Hope for Tomorrow program, a transformational initiative designed to break the cycle of poverty and expand economic opportunity in Spencer County.

Funded through the generosity of donors to the Foundation, the Impact Grant Program was designed to provide major support for local projects that address the county’s most pressing challenges, including poverty, mental health, substance use, and economic development.

The Hope for Tomorrow program equips low-income residents with the tools to build sustainable, self-sufficient futures through job-readiness training, mentorship, and hands-on experience.

“This is the first year for the Impact Grant Program, and while we saw many strong applications, Christian Resource Center really rose to the top,” said Emily Alvey, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. “They are addressing the root causes of poverty and wrapping their arms around individuals in need.”

Founded in 1976, the Christian Resource Center has served Spencer County for nearly five decades. What began as a small thrift store has grown into a hub of support, offering a food pantry, affordable clothing and household goods, financial assistance, and employment resources. With the launch of Hope for Tomorrow, the organization expands its mission by directly preparing individuals for long-term employment and financial independence.

During the grant presentation at the Christian Resource Center’s Rockport store, Foundation representatives met with staff and volunteers to see firsthand the impact of their services.

“It’s been a pleasure to see the store and see how the Christian Resource Center has best served our community,” Alvey added.

The Spencer County Community Foundation established the Impact Grant Program to fund bold, innovative solutions that create lasting community change. The grant to the Christian Resource Center represents the program’s inaugural award.

“This is community impact in action,” said Alvey. “Donors are making it possible to invest in the future of Spencer County, and organizations like Christian Resource Center are turning that investment into real transformation.”

The 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Application is Now Open in Spencer County

The 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship application is now available in Spencer County through the Spencer County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation Alliance. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) will provide 147 scholarships statewide and one scholarship in Spencer County.

LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis, leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Spencer County through the Spencer County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation Alliance, is open to all Indiana residents who:

graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2026 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2026;
intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and
meet the criteria specific to Spencer County Community Foundation. Visit spencercountycf.org/lilly-endowment-community-scholarship-program for complete information regarding the Spencer County application criteria.

Students can learn more about the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in Spencer County and apply for this scholarship by visiting the Spencer County Community Foundation website. Applications must be completed and submitted by August 25, 2025, to be considered.

Applications will be evaluated on, but not limited to, the following criteria: academic performance, activities and leadership roles, family and personal statement, essays, and interview. Three finalists will be nominated by the Spencer County Community Foundation, and their names will be submitted to ICI for final selection of the recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

Lilly Endowment created LECSP for the 1997-98 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling more than $505 million. More than 5,400 Indiana students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since the program’s inception.

The primary purposes of LECSP are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

$50,000 Impact Grant Available for Transformational Community Projects in Spencer County

The Spencer County Community Foundation is now accepting funding requests for its 2025 Impact Grant cycle. The Foundation seeks innovative projects or programs that address Spencer County’s most pressing challenges: breaking the cycle of poverty, improving mental health and addressing substance use, and increasing economic opportunities. Eligible projects should aim to tackle the root causes of these issues and offer transformational solutions that create lasting, positive change in the community.

The 2025 Impact Grant Letter of Inquiry form will be open from March 14, 2025, to April 14, 2025.

The Spencer County Community Foundation will award one $50,000 Impact Grant to support a project or program with a minimum total cost of $50,000. Eligible organizations are invited to submit a Letter of Inquiry through our online form by April 14, 2025. The Letter of Inquiry form is a preliminary step to assess whether the proposed project aligns with the Foundation’s funding priorities before moving forward with a formal grant application.

The Foundation uses a two-step application process to review Impact Grant requests:

Letter of Inquiry Form: The deadline for submitting the Letter of Inquiry form is April 14, 2025. After review by the Foundation’s grants committee, all applicants will be notified of their status by May 15, 2025.
Formal Application: Successful applicants will be invited to submit a formal grant application by June 12, 2025.

The planning report, conducted in partnership with the Indiana First READI region, profiles and pinpoints specific growth opportunities for entrepreneurs in several categories, according to Jill Carpenter, President and CEO of the Community Foundation Alliance here.

“Based on direct primary research conducted across multiple counties, the Indiana First Quality of Life Economic Impact Analysis report reveals market potential and entrepreneurial gaps on a county-by-county basis, demonstrating areas of real demand,” said Carpenter. “A careful review of key areas can yield some significant potential market growth for the right companies, professionals, and entrepreneurs.”

The economic development executives in the First Indiana region noted that they intend to mine the report to determine opportunities for scalable market growth and talent attraction. The report offers an analysis of the potential economic impact for addressing and improving defined issues throughout the region.

“This report can be a workbook for professionals looking to expand, relocate, or start up a business in multiple categories,” said Chris Pfaff, CEO of Knox County Indiana Economic Development. “It provides actionable data on what services and capacity presently exist within our counties and region, and what services residents travel outside of the county or region to buy or obtain.”

“Those gaps represent a definable opportunity to be evaluated and captured,” he added. “It can serve as a talent attractor and entrepreneurial opportunity of the first order for our region.”

The information is expected to help the region enhance its state and local investments from the READI program and other private investment opportunities.

“In order to get feedback from each county, key stakeholders were invited to participate in community conversations regarding essential services in their county in addition to a public survey facilitated by consultants,” said Julie Moorman, President and CEO of the Harrison County Community Foundation. “We are appreciative of the input from community stakeholders in helping identify gaps in essential services and sharing their input of quality-of-life amenities in their communities.”

The 191-page report, assembled by TPMA (Thomas P. Miller and Associates), includes significant data analysis and identified specific opportunities to enhance the quality of life in five southern Indiana counties, sketching out gaps that can be filled through initiative planning and growth, infrastructure investments, and elevation of talent opportunities.

Actionable potential engagement highlights for growth range from healthcare and essential services to entertainment and dining, as well as professional and technical services.

"The report confirms what we’ve heard anecdotally for years—many Perry County residents travel outside the county for veterinary services," said Erin Emerson, President and CEO of the Perry County Development Corporation. "Now, by pairing local insight with concrete data, we can make an even stronger case that additional veterinary services could thrive here - this is just one of many opportunities highlighted in the analysis that align with the needs of our community."

Spencer County Community Foundation Announces the 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program Recipient

The Spencer County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Spencer County – Hadley Leibering, Heritage Hills High School . Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership. Scholarship award alternates were also announced. The first alternate, Sawyer Wahl, Heritage Hills High School will receive a $2,500 scholarship renewable for up to four years totaling $10,000. Sean Windell, Heritage Hills High School was named the second alternate.

“The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship is a life-changing opportunity for students,” said Emily Alvey, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. “The Community Foundation was thoroughly pleased with the quality of the applications submitted and the involvement of the applicants. Spencer County is fortunate to be the home of many talented youth.”

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years. The scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.

“I am honored and grateful to be the 2025 recipient of the Spencer County Community Foundation Lilly (Endowment Community) Scholarship,” said Hadley Leibering, 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar. “Thanks to God for the many opportunities I have had to learn and grow with the support of family and friends. In determining Spencer County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar nominees, consideration was given to academic performance, activities, essay, family and personal statement, and finalist essay and interview by the LECSP Nominating Committee. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.

Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1997-98 school year. Since then, grant funding in excess of $490 million has supported more than 5,300 Indiana students who have received scholarships through the program.

The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

Many of our donors have chosen to honor their loved ones, communities, high schools, colleges, and professions by establishing scholarship funds through their local Community Foundations in Daviess, Gibson, Knox, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, and Warrick Counties. These funds support the annual Community Scholarship programs, providing valuable opportunities for students in Southwest Indiana. Thanks to their contributions, applications are being accepted now, with a deadline of Monday, January 20, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

"We are excited to once again provide scholarship opportunities to students in our Southwest Indiana region,” says Melinda Waldroup, Chief Program Officer at the Community Foundation Alliance. “By offering these scholarships, we are not only investing in individual students but also in the future of our communities. We encourage all eligible students to apply and take a step towards achieving their educational and career goals."

Each scholarship is unique and supports students with a variety of backgrounds, educational goals, and economic statuses. $10,000 IN GRANTS AWARDED TO ORGANIZATIONS SERVING SPENCER COUNTY

Grants totaling $10,000 were awarded to eight organizations serving Spencer County, by the Women’s Fund of Spencer County, held by the Spencer County Community Foundation.

Grant Recipients:

Holly’s House: $1,500 for the Preventing Violence through Education program
Dale Women’s Organization: $800 for back-to-school supplies for Spencer County students in need
Memorial Hospital Foundation: $1,500 for the Patient Assistance program for Spencer County women
Isaiah 1:17 Project: $1,500 for the Hopes and Dreams for Children in Spencer County program
Deaconess Hospital Foundation: $2,200 for the Mobile Mammography Outreach program in Spencer County
Boys and Girls Club of Evansville: $1,000 for the SMART Girls program at Rockport Elementary School
Mariah Hill Foundation: $500 for baby changing stations at the new community building
Lincoln Hills Development Corporation: $1,000 for community outreach and free health insurance enrollment assistance for Spencer County children and families

The Women’s Fund of Spencer County committee reviewed grant requests and made recommendations to the Spencer County Community Foundation. The types of charitable activities that were considered through this grant program were arts and culture, community development, education, health, human services, environment, recreation, and youth development projects and programs.

This Fund was established in the fall of 2006, dedicated to supporting programs that give opportunities, encouragement, knowledge, and hope to the Spencer County community.

Spencer County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications For The 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program

The 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship application is now available in Spencer County through the Spencer County Community Foundation. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) will provide 147 scholarships statewide and one scholarship in Spencer County. LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Spencer County through the Spencer County Community Foundation, is open to all Indiana residents who:

graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2025 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2025;
intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and

Lilly Endowment created LECSP for the 1997-98 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling more than $490 million. More than 5,300 Indiana students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since the program’s inception.

Spencer County Community Foundation Community Good Grants Program Will Begin Accepting Applications On June 10th

The Spencer County Community Foundation will begin accepting online applications for its Community Good Grants Program on Monday, June 10, 2024. The deadline to submit applications is Monday, July 22, 2024.

The Community Good Grants program supports a variety of charitable purposes in Spencer County. The grant encompasses four different request levels:

· Level 1: Requests of $500 or less

· Level 2: Requests of $501 – $2,500

· Level 3: Requests of $2,501 – $9,999

· Level 4: Requests of $10,000 or more

Charitable organizations can view details related to funding requirements and access the grant application via the Foundation’s website at https://www.spencercountycf.org/community-good-grants-program .

Funding requests are reviewed by a committee of community leaders under the local advisory board. They review all grant applications, conduct site visits to potential grantees, and deliberate on which organizations best serve the community’s greatest needs. All organizations submitting grant proposals will be notified of the outcome on or before October 31, 2024.

Spencer County Community Foundation Awards Over $77,000 In Community Scholarships

The Spencer County Community Foundation announces the distribution of community scholarships totaling $77,950. This year, funds established by generous donors provided scholarships to area students.

In addition to announcing the recipients, the Regional Director of Community Engagement & Impact, Emily Alvey says, “The Spencer County Community Foundation expresses gratitude towards our philanthropic fund founders and donors, whose generosity enables the realization of these scholarship awards. Their commitment to the education of our youth profoundly influences the future of every recipient. Selecting deserving individuals for these scholarships is carried out by a dedicated committee of volunteer leaders. We deeply appreciate their efforts and dedication in this endeavor. The selection process is always challenging due to the exceptional caliber of our Spencer County students.”

Scholarship awards were announced as follows.

The Brauns Family Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Thomas and Vicki Brauns to benefit graduating seniors of South Spencer High School who have attended at least two years at Luce Elementary School and are pursuing post-secondary education. The recipient of this year’s award in the amount of $1,000 is Max Eble , a senior at South Spencer High School and the son of Jeremy and Jennifer Eble. Following graduation, he plans to attend the University of Evansville to study Actuarial Science.

The Community Scholarship Trust of Spencer County Fund is an annual scholarship created by the Community Scholarship Trust of Spencer County and sponsored by the Spencer County 4-H Association to benefit graduating seniors of any Spencer County high school pursuing post-secondary education. The recipient of this year’s award in the amount of $500 is Kyra Campbell , a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Laura Campbell and the late Robert Campbell. Following graduation, she plans to attend Sullivan University to pursue a degree in Baking and Pastry Arts.

The Dale and Marilyn Hasler Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by family and friends of Dale and Marilyn Hasler to benefit graduating seniors of Heritage Hills High School or Southridge High School pursuing a post-secondary, 4-year degree in engineering. The recipient of this year’s award in the amount of $500 is Esau Valdez , a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the son of Esau and Maria Valdez. Following graduation, he plans to attend the University of Southern Indiana to pursue a degree in Engineering.

The Elisa and Brian Peters Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by the Peters Family in memory of Elisa Peters to provide scholarships to Heritage Hills High School seniors. Elisa was a life-long advocate of learning with a passion for the medical sciences. The recipient of this year’s $1,000 award is Nadia Eisenhauer , a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Daniel and Jaima Eisenhauer. Following graduation, she plans to attend the University of Evansville to study Nursing.

The Friends of Pioneer Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by Pioneer sales representatives in the LPH Territory to support the educational endeavors of high school graduates and graduating seniors who have a parent employed in the agriculture industry. This year’s $2,000 scholarship recipient is Katlyn Betz, a senior at Forest Park High School and the daughter of Nathan and Rachel Betz. Following graduation, she plans to attend Vincennes University to major in Agribusiness and minor in Animal Husbandry.

The Harold and Thelma Hunter Scholarship is an annual scholarship created in memory of Harold Hunter by his wife, Thelma Hunter, and their children to help graduates of Heritage Hills High School pursue advanced education. The recipient of the $500 scholarship is Grace Keller , a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Dixon and Martha Keller. Following graduation, she plans to attend Indiana Tech to pursue a degree in Sports Management.

The Mabel Mason Ryan Memorial Scholarship is an annual renewable scholarship created by the estate of Mabel M. Ryan to advance education in nursing and medicine. This year’s $10,000 scholarship recipient is Kiya White , a senior at South Spencer High School and the daughter of Timothy White and Heather White. Following graduation, she plans to study Kinesiology and Integrated Physiology at Hanover College.

The Mike Ryan Memorial Scholarship is an annual renewable scholarship created by Mabel M. Ryan in memory of her husband to benefit graduating seniors of any Spencer County high school pursuing post-secondary education. The recipients of this year’s scholarship, each receiving a $10,000 scholarship, are Maxwell Etienne and Shelby Ford . Maxwell is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the son of Sheryl Etienne and the late Daniel Etienne. Following graduation, he plans to pursue a degree in Film Production at Western Kentucky University. Shelby is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Gerri Ford and the late Kelly Ford. Following graduation, she plans to study Cosmetology at The Salon Professional Academy.

The Narl and Hazel Conner Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Deann Siegel, Keith Conner, Ron Conner, and Eric Conner as a loving tribute to their father and mother to benefit Heritage Hills High School seniors who plan to enroll as full-time students at an accredited 4-year college or university. This year’s recipients, receiving $1,000 each, are Allie Wetzel and Claire Coleman . Allie is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Josh and Amber Wetzel. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in Exercise Science at Western Kentucky University. Claire is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Clint and Amy Coleman. Following graduation, she plans to attend Western Kentucky University to pursue a degree in Dental Hygiene.

The Othmar and Virginia Ringeman Family Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Othmar and Virginia Ringeman to support the post-secondary education of Heritage Hills High School graduates. This year’s recipients, receiving $3,000 each, are Hannah Bolin , Taylor Ruxer , Allie Wetzel , and Samantha Haefling . Hannah is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Duane and Karen Bolin. Following graduation, she plans to obtain a degree in Social Work at the University of Southern Indiana. Samantha is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Paul Haefling and Ellen Haefling. Following graduation, she plans to attend Indiana University Southeast to study Business.

The Raleigh and Thelma Abshier Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Jeaniece Scheessele to advance education in honor of her parents to benefit graduating seniors of South Spencer High School pursuing post-secondary education. This year’s $750 scholarship recipient is Kailey Gibbs , a senior at South Spencer High School and the daughter of Kenneth and Kimberly Gibbs. Following graduation, she plans to study Brain and Behavior Sciences at Purdue University.

The Randall L. Haaff Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Randall L. Haaff to help graduating seniors pursue advanced education at the University of Southern Indiana. This year’s recipients, receiving $600 each are Esau Valdez and Hailey Brown . Hailey is a senior at South Spencer High School and the daughter of Brandon Brown and Lindsay Brown. Following graduation, she plans to further her education at the University of Southern Indiana.

The Rockport American Legion Baseball Team Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by the Rockport American Legion Baseball Team in memory of Bobby “Coach” Snyder to help graduating seniors pursue post-secondary education at an accredited institution. This year’s recipients, receiving $5,000 each, are Boston Schulte , Brailee Head , and Cyrilla Sommer . Boston is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the son of Karen Schulte. Following graduation, he plans to pursue a degree in Animal Science at Kansas State University. Brailee is a senior at South Spencer High School and the daughter of Brandi Erwin. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in Nursing at the University of Southern Indiana. Cyrilla Sommer is a senior at Tell City High School and the daughter of Andy and Sara Sommer. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in Finance at Indiana University.

The Spencer County Farm Bureau, Inc. Educational Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by the Spencer County Farm Bureau to assist students pursuing post-high school educational programs. The recipient of this year’s award in the amount of $1,500 is Sarah Day . Sarah is a 2023 graduate of Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Eric and Lisa Day. She is currently a student at Indiana University pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Neuroscience.

The Spencer Industries Incorporated Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Spencer Industries Incorporated employees to further the education of natural, adopted, or step-children of employees, recognize the academic achievement of those graduating from high school and continuing their education, and motivate recipients to achieve maximum scholastic and vocational potential. This year’s recipients, receiving $2,000 each, are Claire Coleman , Liz Gehlhausen , and Brittney Wahl . Liz is a 2022 graduate of Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Tina and Brian Gehlhausen. She is currently a student at Purdue University pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering. Brittney is a 2023 graduate of Tecumseh High School and the daughter of Timothy and Rita Wahl. She is currently pursuing a degree in Nursing at the University of Southern Indiana.

Community Foundation Alliance Recognizes Staff Member Emily Alvey Through New Grant Program

The Community Foundation Alliance would like to congratulate staff member, Emily Alvey, on her recent employment anniversary. Alvey recently celebrated her fifth work anniversary as the Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact for Perry and Spencer counties, part of the nine-county regional footprint of the Alliance. In her role, Alvey identifies and helps address the needs of the community by working with community leaders and with grants and scholarships committees. Alvey also serves on various nonprofit boards to further her passion for helping her community.

The recently introduced Generosity at Work Grant Program enables Alliance staff members to contribute to the communities they serve by recommending a $500 grant to the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of their preference through the Ronald L. Bauer Regional Fund on their work anniversary.

Alvey selected Isaiah 117 House Spencer/Perry to receive a $500 general support grant through the Generosity at Work Grant Program.

“I am passionate about the work of this organization,” explains Alvey. “I've been fortunate to observe the emergence of this organization within our community—starting with raising community awareness, progressing to breaking ground, and now gearing up to open its doors.” The Isaiah 117 House for Spencer and Perry counties is currently under construction in Chrisney, Indiana.

The Susan Grundhoefer Memorial Fund, held by the Spencer County Community Foundation, recently awarded a $700 grant to Nancy Hanks Elementary School to update literature and posters in the school building to reflect student diversity.

The fund was established in memory of Susan Grundhoefer by husband, Bernie Grundhoefer, and children: Amber Wetzel, Tara Thacker, Denise Scott, and Seth Grundhoefer.

“We are extremely grateful for the Susan Grundhoefer Memorial Fund. This year, this memorial will be helping Nancy Hanks create a more inclusive environment for all students. Our goal is to add more visuals and reading materials that represent students with different races, ethnicities, and disabilities. Spencer County Community Foundation Awards Community Good Grants Over $220,000

The Spencer County Community Foundation recently announced Community Good Grants totaling $220,717.86 to twenty-seven organizations serving Spencer County.

This year’s grant recipients are as follows:

· American Red Cross Southwest Indiana Chapter was awarded $10,000 to support the collection of life-saving blood that will supply medical facilities serving Spencer County residents.

· Association for a Better Rockport was awarded $5,060 to host the 2024 Summer Concert Series and the Solar Eclipse event and for the purchase of supplies for the events.

· Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Indiana was awarded $5,000 to grow the number of youth served in Spencer County by recruiting more mentors and expanding to new site-based locations.

· Boys and Girls Club of Evansville was awarded $9,500 to offer the Triple Play program at Rockport Elementary School.

· Bread of Life Ministry Inc. was awarded $2,100 to cover the cost of freight for donated food and to purchase food items at discounted prices to distribute to low-income families in the Tri-State area.

· Buffalo Trace Council-Boy Scouts of America was awarded $9,000 to Institute Scoutreach in the South Spencer School Corporation serving kindergarten - 5th grade students.

· Chemo Buddies was awarded $4,528 to provide comfort kits to Spencer County cancer patients.

· Chrisney Baptist Church was awarded $8,000 to provide food for students in need at Chrisney Elementary School every weekend for the school year.

· Christian Resource Center was awarded $10,000 to purchase food for the Food Pantry.

· Crisis Connection, Inc. was awarded $4,430 to provide advocacy support to victims of domestic and sexual violence in Spencer County.

· Dale Presbyterian Church was awarded $9,803.86 to replace two convection ovens used for weekly Community Table meals.

· Epsilon Psi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa was awarded $2,000 to support the Anabel Wood Plein Air Paint Out event.

· For Evansville was awarded $9,500 to provide a platform that enables agencies to work together towards a comprehensive pathway to success for those navigating crises.

· Friends of Lincoln State Park, Inc. was awarded $7,500 to provide entertainment for those expected to converge in Spencer County for the solar eclipse.

· Heritage Hills PATS was awarded $13,000 to provide a Heritage Hills shirt to each student in grades 7 ^th – 12 ^th to foster a sense of community and belonging.

· Lincoln Hills Development Corporation was awarded $2,500 to provide free health insurance enrollment assistance to prevent coverage loss and increase access to healthcare in Spencer County.

· Luce Elementary School was awarded $6,065 to expand the Farm to School Program by purchasing raised beds, hydroponics, and greenhouse supplies.

· Maria Hill Foundation was awarded $9,805 to build a 20-space, ADA-compliant parking lot at the Mariah Hill Community Building.

· North Spencer Archery Club was awarded $10,187 to purchase additional archery equipment.

· North Spencer County School Corporation was awarded $14,000 to support Spencer County Tobacco Prevention/Cessation Program and VOICE Youth Leadership Team in providing prevention, cessation, and educational activities and programs for youth, adults, organizations, health care providers, and employers within Spencer County.

· Santa’s Elves and Santa Claus Museum was awarded $500 to purchase letters with a Christmas message to be sent in response to children's letters to Santa and letters on which children may write to Santa.

· Spencer County 4-H Association Inc. was awarded $29,500 to install the plumbing and HVAC for the new restroom facility at the 4-H Center.

· Stir-N-Up Hope was awarded $7,000 to purchase two new program horses that support ability-inclusive horsemanship.

· The Way of Rockport Indiana, Inc. was awarded $3,340 to purchase items for The Way Home, such as cleaning and laundry supplies, food, and educational materials for the 12-Step Celebrate Recovery Support Group.

· Town of Grandview was awarded $3,899 to replace flagpoles at the Spencer County Veterans Memorial.

· Town of Richland was awarded $19,500 for a pickleball court that will provide a recreational opportunity to meet the needs of residents and visitors.

This year, donors to the Spencer County Community Foundation are again making scholarship awards available through the Foundation’s Community Scholarship Program. Applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, February 2, 2024.

“Donors have honored their loved ones, high schools, or professions by establishing scholarship funds through the Community Foundation,” says Emily Alvey, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. “We administer the scholarship funds established by individuals, families, and organizations to assist local students in pursuit of advanced education. Together, these scholarships make up our Community Scholarship Program.”

Students may apply for one or more scholarships as long as they meet the particular eligibility requirements. Details about each scholarship and the application are posted on the Foundation’s website at spencercountycf.org/scholarships .

Eligibility requirements and selection criteria are determined by donors and are posted on the website. Each scholarship is unique and supports students with a variety of backgrounds, educational goals, and economic statuses. Awards are made without regard to race, creed, color, sex, religion, or national origin and are based on a competitive process which may consider academic achievement, extracurricular activities, personal aspirations, educational goals, and financial need.

Spencer County Community Foundation Announces the 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Recipient

The Spencer County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Spencer County – Mia Lawalin of Heritage Hills High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

“Mia’s involvement and dedication to her school and her community were apparent in her application and interview. The nominating committee was honored to have the opportunity to meet her and recommend her for this life-changing opportunity,” said Emily Alvey, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact for the Spencer County Community Foundation.

Mia is the daughter of Ben and Abbie Lawalin, of Santa Claus. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in Secondary Mathematics Education. In addition to excelling academically, Mia is involved in a variety of school activities including Beta Club, Spell Bowl Team, Academic Bowl Team, Natural Helpers, Choir, Musical Productions, and Dance Team. Outside of academics, she is actively involved as team captain of JDRF Fundraiser Team, worship leader and leadership team of Santa Claus United Methodist Church, volunteer tutoring, and worship leader of Noel United Methodist Church.

In determining Spencer County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar nominee, consideration was given to academic performance, an essay, community and school involvement, special circumstances, an impromptu essay, and an interview by the LECSP Nominating Committee. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.

“The Community Foundation was thoroughly pleased with the quality of the applications and the involvement of the applicants. Spencer County is full of talented youth,” said Alvey. Scholarship award alternates were also announced. The first alternate, Braxton Schaefer will receive a scholarship from the Friends of Spencer County Fund. Emma DeWeese was named the second alternate.

Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1998-99 school year and has supported the program every year since with grants totaling in excess of $505 million. More than 5,200 Indiana students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship since the program’s inception.

Women’s Fund of Spencer County Announces Grant Recipients

The Women’s Fund of Spencer County, a fund held by the Spencer County Community Foundation, is pleased to announce that grants totaling $8,000 were awarded to five organizations serving Spencer County. This year’s list of grant recipients are:

· $1,000 to The Way of Rockport Indiana, Inc. to provide free childcare for the children of parents who attend the 12-Step Celebrate Recovery Support group;

· $1,000 to Holly’s House, Inc. to provide a prevention program to elementary students in Spencer County that teaches skills to keep kids safe from abuse;

· $1,000 to Boys and Girls Club of Evansville to provide the SMART Girls program at Rockport Elementary;

· $2,500 to South Spencer County School Corporation to provide afterschool clubs and activities for students in grades 6 ^th – 8 ^th at South Spencer Middle School; and

· $2,500 to Stir-N-Up Hope to provide a program called "Recovering Women - Empowered by Horses and Hope" for women in Spencer County Drug Court.

The Women’s Fund of Spencer County reviewed funding requests, then the committee made funding recommendations to the Community Foundation. The types of charitable activities that were considered through this grant program were arts and culture, community development, education, health, human services, environment, recreation, and youth development projects and programs.

This Fund was established in the fall of 2006, dedicated to supporting programs that give opportunities, encouragement, knowledge, and hope to all women and families in Spencer County.

Spencer County Community Foundation Announces Changes In Community Good Grants Cycle

The Spencer County Community Foundation announces that the Community Good Grant cycle will no longer be a year-round cycle but will instead be an annual grant cycle.

What does this mean for local nonprofits serving Spencer County? The annual Community Good Grants cycle will open in September this year and close in October. In subsequent years, it will open in August and close in September. There are no changes to the eligibility or application process. It will be important for nonprofits to ensure their application is submitted completely on the Foundation’s website before the deadline. Late submissions will not be accepted.

"As we acknowledge the significant shift for our local nonprofits, we stand ready to amplify this change across the entire county and provide unwavering support for their invaluable endeavors," explained Emily Alvey, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact.

This year’s important dates are:

· Grant Cycle Opens: September 8 (Application available online at www.spencercountycf.org/community-good-grants-program )

· Deadline to Apply: October 23

The Community Good Grants program supports a variety of charitable purposes in Spencer County. The grant encompasses four different request levels:

· Level 1: Requests of $500 or less

Last fiscal year, the Spencer County Community Foundation awarded $162,987 through the Community Good Grants program. Moving to an annual grant cycle allows the staff and committee volunteers to focus on community engagement initiatives rather than continuously reviewing grants – allowing the committee to have a full view of community needs, and to approach giving with a unified lens.

Community Good Grants are reviewed by a committee of community leaders under the local advisory board. They review all grant applications, conduct site visits to potential grantees, and deliberate on which organizations best serve the community’s greatest needs.

Spencer County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications For The 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program

The 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship (LECSP) application is now available in Spencer County through the Spencer County Community Foundation. The LECSP will provide 147 scholarships statewide and one scholarship in Spencer County. The LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Spencer County through the Spencer County Community Foundation, is open to all Indiana residents who:

• graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2024 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2024;

• intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and

• meet the criteria specific to their local Community Foundation.

Applications will be evaluated on, but not limited to, the following criteria: academic performance, school and community activities, and essays. Finalists for the scholarship will also participate in an interview with the committee. One recipient and two alternates will be nominated by the Spencer County Community Foundation, and their names will be submitted to ICI for final selection of the recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

Lilly Endowment created LECSP for the 1997-98 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling more than $486 million. More than 5,000 Indiana students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since the program’s inception.

The primary purposes of the LECSP are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

Spencer County Community Foundation Announces Women’s Fund Grant Opportunity

The Spencer County Community Foundation Women’s Fund is now accepting applications for charitable projects or activities in Spencer County for awards up to $5,000. The Women’s Fund invites charitable nonprofit organizations to apply for the grant by completing a grant application describing how their organization would use the award. Grant applications will be accepted from June 16 to July 17, 2023.

The Foundation welcomes funding requests from non-profit organizations that are tax-exempt under sections 501(c)(3) and 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code and from governmental agencies. Funding requests from other nonprofit organizations to carry out charitable projects or activities may also be accepted.

The types of charitable activities that may be supported through this grant program include arts and culture, community development, education, health, human services, environment, recreation, and youth development projects and programs.

The grant application process will be conducted online via the Community Foundation’s website at https://www.spencercountycf.org/grants

The Women’s Fund grants committee will review funding requests and contact grant applicants if additional questions arise. Spencer County Community Foundation Summer Community Scholarship Program Accepting Applications

The Cornelius R. Collignon Family Scholarship and the Schmidt-Yeager Scholarship applications are being re-opened due to lack of eligible applicants during the first round.

Students may apply for the scholarships as long as they meet the particular eligibility requirements. Details about the scholarships and the application are posted on the Foundation’s website at spencercountycf.org/scholarships .

For the Cornelius R. Collignon Family Scholarship, students must be a graduate of Heritage Hills High School in Spencer County, Indiana, who are entering their college freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year in 2023. Past recipients of the award may reapply; however, preference will be given to first-time applicants. Applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) and be pursuing a four-year degree at an accredited Indiana college or university majoring in agriculture, forestry, or aviation (with preference given to applicants majoring in agriculture).

For the Schmidt-Yeager Scholarship, applicants must be a graduate of South Spencer High School, who have earned at least eighteen credit hours towards a college degree within the past ten years. Applicants must have a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) from previous college coursework and must be planning to pursue a 2- or 4- year degree in healthcare or agriculture at any accredited college, university, or technical school.

The application deadline is midnight on Friday, June 30, 2023.

Spencer County Community Foundation Awards Over $51,000 In Community Scholarships

The Spencer County Community Foundation announces the distribution of community scholarships totaling $51,850. This year, funds, established by generous donors, provided scholarships to area students.

In addition to announcing the recipients, the Regional Director of Community Engagement & Impact, Emily Alvey says, “The Spencer County Community Foundation expresses gratitude towards our philanthropic fund founders and donors, whose generosity enables the realization of these scholarship awards. Their commitment to the education of our youth profoundly influences the future of every recipient. Selecting deserving individuals for these scholarships is carried out diligently and conscientiously by a dedicated committee of volunteer leaders. We deeply appreciate their tireless efforts and unwavering dedication in this endeavor. The selection process is always challenging due to the exceptional caliber of our Spencer County students.”

Scholarships awarded were announced as follows.

The Brauns Family Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Thomas and Vicki Brauns to benefit graduating seniors of South Spencer High School who have attended at least two years at Luce Elementary School and are pursuing post-secondary education. The recipient of this year’s award in the amount of $1,000 is Noah Bunner, a senior at South Spencer High School. Noah is the son of Zack and Lana Bunner. Following graduation, he plans to attend Franklin College to study Engineering.

The Community Scholarship Trust of Spencer County Fund is an annual scholarship created by the Community Scholarship Trust of Spencer County and sponsored by the Spencer County 4-H Association to benefit graduating seniors of any Spencer County high school pursuing post-secondary education. The recipient of this year’s award in the amount of $500 is Rylan Begle, a senior at Heritage Hills High School. Rylan is the son of Shaun Begle and Melisa Begle. Following graduation, he plans to attend Purdue University to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering.

The Dale and Marilyn Hasler Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by family and friends of Dale and Marilyn Hasler to benefit graduating seniors of Heritage Hills High School or Southridge High School pursuing a post-secondary, 4-year degree in engineering. The recipient of this year’s award in the amount of $500 is Kevin Dilger, a senior at Heritage Hills High School. Kevin is the son of Mark and Teresa Dilger. Following graduation, he plans to attend University of Evansville to study Civil Engineering.

The Elisa and Brian Peters Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by the Peters Family in memory of Elisa Peters to provide scholarships to Heritage Hills High School seniors. Elisa was a life-long advocate of learning with a passion for the medical sciences. The recipient of this year’s award in the amount of $1,000 is Jenna McDowell, a senior at Heritage Hills High School. Jenna is the daughter of Robert and Laronda McDowell. Following graduation, she plans to attend Ball State University to study Psychology.

The Friends of IU Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by Michael and Mary Schriefer and Larry and Charlene Hess to provide scholarships to Heritage Hills High School graduating seniors who plan to attend Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. The recipient of this year’s award in the amount of $1,500 is Gabriela Soni Perez, a senior at Heritage Hills High School. Gabriela is the daughter of Rey Josue Soni Flores and Clara Perez Barco. Following graduation, she plans to attend Indiana University to study Marketing.

The Friends of Pioneer Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by Pioneer sales representatives in the LPH Territory to support the educational endeavors of high school graduates and graduating seniors who have a parent employed in the agriculture industry. This year’s $2,000 scholarship recipient is Gavin Smith, a senior at Boonville High School and the son of Derrick and Amber Smith. Following graduation, Gavin plans to pursue a degree in Logistics and Supply Chain Management/ Business at the University of Evansville.

The Gene and Christina Schwindel Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Gene and Christina Schwindel to benefit graduating seniors or graduates of Heritage Hills High School pursuing post-secondary education. This year’s recipients, receiving $1,000 each are Sarah Day, Kyndall Jordan, Hunter Stetter, and Lanae Canen. Sarah is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Eric and Lisa Day. Following graduation, she plans to attend Indiana University to pursue a degree in Human Biology. Kyndall was a 2021 graduate of Heritage Hills High School and is the daughter of John and Beth Jordan. She is currently a student at Western Kentucky University studying Communication Sciences and Disorders. Hunter is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the son of Aaron Stetter and Denise Richlen. Following graduation, Hunter plans to obtain a degree in Architecture and Construction Management at Murray State University. Lanae is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Justin and Kathy Canen. Following graduation, she will be attending the University of Evansville to pursue a degree in Biology.

The Harold and Thelma Hunter Scholarship is an annual scholarship created in memory of Harold Hunter by his wife, Thelma Hunter, and their children to help graduates of Heritage Hills High School pursue advanced education. The recipient of the $500 scholarship is Halle Jordan, a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of John and Beth Jordan. Following graduation, Halle plans to study Social Work at the University of Southern Indiana.

The Mabel Mason Ryan Memorial Scholarship is an annual renewable scholarship created by the estate of Mabel M. Ryan to advance education in nursing and medicine. This year’s $10,000 scholarship recipient is Alana Ebert, a senior at Heritage Hills High School. Alana is the daughter of Tommy and Kellie Ebert. Following graduation, she plans to attend Vincennes University Jasper Campus to obtain a degree in Nursing.

Brenden Chew, a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the son of Ralph and Lori Chew. Following graduation, Brenden plans to attend Kentucky Wesleyan College to study Business Administration.

The Narl and Hazel Conner Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Deann Siegel, Keith Conner, Ron Conner, and Eric Conner as a loving tribute to their father and mother to benefit Heritage Hills High School seniors who plan to enroll as full-time students at an accredited 4-year college or university. This year’s recipients, receiving $1,000 each are Avery Vinson and Hunter Stetter. Avery is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Breck and Ashlee Vinson. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in Business at Indiana University.

The Othmar and Virginia Ringeman Family Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Othmar and Virginia Ringeman to support secondary education of Heritage Hills High School graduates. This year’s recipients, receiving $2,000 each are Jillian Tretter, Elliot Rahman, Charles Brentlinger, Emma Day, and Lillian Gogel. Jillian is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Stanley and Jennifer Tretter. Following graduation, Jillian plans to study Architectural Engineering at University of Evansville. Elliot is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the son of Wayne and Julie Rahman. Following graduation, Elliot plans to study Automotive Technology at Southern Illinois University. Charles is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the son of Mike and Janelle Brentlinger. Following graduation, he plans to pursue a degree in Engineering at Purdue University. She is currently a student at Purdue University pursuing a degree in Dietetics and Nutrition, Fitness, and Health.

The Raleigh and Thelma Abshier Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Jeaniece Scheessele to advance education in honor of her parents to benefit graduating seniors of South Spencer High School pursuing post-secondary education. This year’s $750 scholarship recipient is Eden Risse, a senior at South Spencer High School and the daughter of Jay and Sherri Risse. Following graduation, she plans to study Exercise Science at Lipscomb University.

The Randall L. Haaff Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Randall L. Haaff to help graduating seniors pursue advanced education at the University of Southern Indiana. This year’s recipient, receiving $600 is Kelsey Cameron. Kelsey is a senior at South Spencer High School and the daughter of John and Cindy Cameron. Following graduation, she will be attending the University of Southern Indiana to pursue a degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

The Spencer County Farm Bureau, Inc. Educational Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by the Spencer County Farm Bureau to assist students pursuing post-high school educational programs. The recipient of this year’s award in the amount of $1,500 is Trinity Britton. Trinity is a senior at South Spencer High School and the daughter of Matt and Dana Britton. Following graduation, she plans to attend Asbury University to study Exercise Science and Youth Ministry.

The Spencer Industries Incorporated Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Spencer Industries Incorporated employees to further the education of natural, adopted or step-children of employees, recognize academic achievement of those graduating from high school and continuing their education, and to motivate recipients to achieve maximum scholastic and vocational potential. This year’s recipients, receiving $2,000 each are Caleb Hochgesang, Liz Gehlhausen, and Brittney Wahl. Caleb is a senior at Heritage Hills High School and the son of Ryan and Kimberly Hochgesang. Following graduation, Caleb plans to attend Western Kentucky University to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering. Liz was a 2022 graduate of Heritage Hills High School and the daughter of Tina and Brian Gehlhausen. She is currently a student at Purdue University pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering. St. Meinrad Chamber of Commerce was awarded $15,000 to improve and maintain the basketball court to enable it to be used for a dual pickle ball & basketball court.

North Spencer County School Corporation was awarded $3,000 to support Spencer County Tobacco Prevention/Cessation Program and VOICE Youth Leadership Team in providing prevention, cessation, and educational activities and programs for youth, adults, organizations, health care providers, and employers within Spencer County.

Vincennes University Jasper Center Foundation Inc. was awarded $4,284 to provide Spencer County students with the Scholastic Excellence Award.

Success Through Mentoring was awarded $1,400 for the creation of a professional website for the organization as well as the purchase of a donor software.

Santa’s Elves and Santa Claus Museum was awarded $12,000 to restore the 1880 Santa Claus Church.

The Isaiah 1:17 Project was awarded $7,000 to provide support to Spencer County fostering families through their programs.

Town of Gentryville was awarded $3,100 to cover the cost of Narcotics and Tracking K9 School for Gentryville Police Department.

North Spencer Archery Club was awarded $7,000 for the purchase and installation of two gas unit heaters.

Spencer County Community Foundation Announces The 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Recipient

The Spencer County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Spencer County – Xia Peters of Heritage Hills High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

“Xia’s involvement and dedication to her school and her community were apparent in her application and interview. The nominating committee was honored to have the opportunity to meet her and recommend her for this life-changing opportunity,” said Emily Alvey, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact for the Spencer County Community Foundation.

Xia is the daughter of Brian Peters and the late Elisa Peters, of Lamar. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in Political Science and Business. In addition to excelling academically, Xia is involved in a variety of school activities including Student Council, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), Riley Dance Marathon, Beta Club, VOICE & SADD, Soccer, Track and Field, and serves as the manager of the girls' basketball team. Outside of academics, she is actively involved in Spencer County 4-H, Spencer County Habitat for Humanity, and Youth Group.

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years. The scholarship is for undergraduate students studying on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.

“The Community Foundation was thoroughly pleased with the quality of the applications and the involvement of the applicants. Spencer County is full of talented youth,” said Alvey. Scholarship award alternates were also announced. The first alternate, Reagan Lawrence will receive a scholarship from the Friends of Spencer County Fund. Jillian Tretter was named the second alternate.

Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1998-99 school year and has supported the program every year since with grants totaling in excess of $486 million. More than 5,000 Indiana students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship since the program’s inception.

Spencer County Community Foundation Community Scholarship Program Now Accepting Applications

This year, donors to the Spencer County Community Foundation are again making scholarship awards available through the Foundation’s Community Scholarship Program.

“Donors have honored their loved ones, high schools, or professions by establishing scholarship funds through the Community Foundation,” says Emily Alvey, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. “We administer separate scholarship funds established by individuals, families, and organizations to assist local students in pursuit of advanced education. Together, these scholarships make up our Community Scholarship Program.”

The Foundation offers the following tips to help students complete their applications:

· Print the Student Review Sheet to assist with your scholarship review process.

· Begin working on the application early.

· Follow all instructions carefully and make sure you are submitting all the required parts (including letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.).

· Check and double-check your application before submitting.

The application deadline is midnight on Friday, February 3, 2023.

Women’s Fund of Spencer County Announces Grant Recipients

The Women’s Fund, held by the Spencer County Community Foundation, is pleased to announce that grants totaling $8,000 were awarded to three organizations serving Spencer County. This year’s list of grant recipients are:

· $1,500 to Holly’s House to support the Think First & Stay Safe Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program in Spencer County elementary schools;

· $3,500 to Christian Resource Center to support the 2022 Coat-A-Kid Program that provides coats, gloves, hats, and scarves to Spencer County children in need between the ages of 0-14; and

· $3,000 to Tri-State Food Bank for the Weekend Backpack Food for Kids Program in Spencer County.

The Women’s Fund of Spencer County grants committee reviewed funding requests, then made recommendations on funding to the Foundation. The types of charitable activities that were considered through this grant program were arts and culture, community development, education, health, human services, environment, recreation, and youth development projects and programs.

This Fund was established in the fall of 2006, dedicated to supporting programs that give opportunities, encouragement, knowledge, and hope to all women and families in Spencer County.

Spencer County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications for The 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program

The 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship application is now available in Spencer County through the Spencer County Community Foundation. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) will provide 143 scholarships statewide, and one scholarship in Spencer County. The LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI), and locally in Spencer County through the Spencer County Community Foundation, is open to all Indiana residents who:

• graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2023 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2023;

• intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and

• meet the criteria specific to their local community foundation.

Lilly Endowment created the LECSP for the 1997-1998 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling more than $424 million. Nearly 5,000 Indiana students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since the program’s inception.

The Spencer County Community Foundation is again pleased to offer the LECSP for its 26 ^th year in Spencer County. “We are so grateful for the opportunity to administer the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in Spencer County. Spencer County Community Foundation Announces Women’s Fund Grant Opportunity

The Spencer County Community Foundation Women’s Fund is now accepting applications for charitable projects or activities in Spencer County for awards up to $5,000. The Women’s Fund invites charitable nonprofit organizations to apply for the grants by completing a grant application describing how their organization would use the award. Grant applications will be accepted from June 20 to July 22, 2022.

Rockport City Police Department was awarded $7,500 for the purchase of a trained police K9, equipment for the K9, medical bills, and continued K9 training.

Christian Resource Center was awarded $10,000 for the purchase of food for the Food Pantry.

Safe Now Foundation was awarded $13,440 to partner with Purdue Extension to offer a Life Skills program.

Santa Claus Police Department was awarded $500 to equip officers with adequate field drug test kits that are reliable and accurate.

Chemo Buddies was awarded $4,080 to provide comfort kits to Spencer County cancer patients.

Bread of Life Ministry Inc. was awarded $2,100 to cover the cost of freight for donated food and to purchase food items at discounted prices to distribute to low-income families.

Town of Chrisney was awarded $4,535 for the purchase of new ballistic vests for the Chrisney Police Department officers.

Spencer County Habitat for Humanity was awarded $8,000 to cover the drywall expense for the Habitat for Humanity home in Chrisney, and $1,000 to cover the cost of the Dave Ramsey course to assist homeowners in becoming better at budgeting, taking care of themselves, their families, and their homes.

Outside of school, Eubank is involved with the Santa Claus United Methodist Church Youth Church Camp and Feed My Starving Children, Beta Club Summer STEM Program and book drive, and swimming lessons. He organized the summer STEM program where he constructed a 45-page packet full of STEM-based activities; set up online submission platforms and program Facebook page; printed and distributed materials to local elementary schools; and communicated with parents of participants.

In nominating Spencer County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar, consideration was given to academic performance, a written essay, community and school involvement, special circumstances, an impromptu essay, and an interview by the Spencer County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Nominating Committee. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, ICI, for the selection of scholarship recipients.

Scholarship award alternates were also announced. First alternate, Skylar Young will receive a scholarship from the Friends of Spencer County Fund. Nathan Windell was named the second alternate.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) is administered locally by the Community Foundation, with the support of local high schools, and the administrative oversight by the Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI). Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1998-1999 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling in excess of $439 million. More than 5,000 Indiana students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship since the program’s inception. The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

Spencer County Community Foundation Awards Community Good Grants Over $35,000

The Spencer County Community Foundation recently presented Community Good Grant awards totaling over $35,000 to six organizations serving Spencer County. These grant were made possible by the Mike and Mabel Mason Ryan Unrestricted Fund.

The grant recipients are as follows: Leadership Spencer County; Tri-State Food Bank; St. Meinrad Volunteer Fire Department; Epsilon Psi Chapter of Kappa, Kappa, Kappa; Deaconess Foundation; and The Way of Rockport Indiana, Inc. The grants were made possible by people and organizations establishing to and contributing to funds held by the Foundation.

Leadership Spencer County was awarded $7,040 to cover the cost of website creation that promotes Spencer County’s quality of place assets to current and potential residents.

Tri-State Food Bank was awarded $9,907 to provide bags of food for children at Rockport Elementary School who rely on the free lunch program during the week and need food for the weekend.

St. Meinrad Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $9,500 for the purchase of new battery operated extrication tools.

Epsilon Psi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa was awarded $1,300 to cover the cost of the judge, building use, clean up, advertising, and food for the Anabel Wood Plein Air Paint Out event.

Deaconess Foundation was awarded $7,000 for the purchase of five AEDs to be placed in the vehicles of Rockport Police Department.

The Way of Rockport Indiana, Inc. was awarded $635 for the purchase of drug and alcohol test kits.
